Biographical Information

Ann Nolan Clark worked as a teacher in New Mexico as well as serving in the State
Department and the U. S. Department of Education in Latin America. She was born in Lals
Vegas, New Mexico. She has written many books about children of various cultures and
researched this book in Minnesota and Finland. She in not apparently of Finnish descent.

This is the story of Maiju and her family who emigrate from Finland and settle in Minnesota
where her parents homestead. Like other homesteaders, her father goes to work in the
lumber camps in winter, but tragedy befalls him. Through the experience, Maiju learns the
